One of the most important things I’ve learned from the cohort 2 is NGO finance. Before joining the programme, I had been introduced to finance and had some understanding of it, but FINGO gave me a much deeper and more practical understanding of how finance works within the NGO sector. My name is Michael praise Gbogboohe and i want to say thank you for the opportunity to be part of the FINGO Finance Mentorship Programme, Cohort 2.

The programme gave me a valuable opportunity to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge in NGO financial management.

What I particularly appreciated was the practical approach to learning. I gained a better understanding of budgeting, financial compliance, internal controls, variance analysis, donor funding, cash flow forecasting, and funding gap analysis. I also had the opportunity to apply these concepts using Excel and other tools, which improved my confidence in handling financial information and making informed decisions.

Beyond the technical knowledge, the programme strengthened my analytical, reporting, problem solving, and professional skills. It also gave me a clearer understanding of the responsibilities of a Finance Officer and the importance of accountability and proper financial management in an organization.

I am sincerely grateful for this impactful experience and would recommend the FINGO Mentorship Programme to anyone looking to gain practical knowledge and grow professionally in the finance and NGO sector.

This is actually my second experience with the FINGO Finance Mentorship Programme. I was part of Cohort 1 and I decided to come back again because of the value I got from my first experience. So, being part of this cohort has been another opportunity to learn and grow.

One thing I really appreciate about this cohort is the intensity. More topics were covered, and I found the sessions very practical. We went beyond the basics and looked at areas such as budgeting, variance analysis, cost allocation, donor funding, which I can relate to my day to day work.

Beyond the technical knowledge, I also value the opportunity to learn from an experienced professional and interact with other people who are intentional about growing in finance. Coming back for another cohort says a lot about the value I found in the programme, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to strengthen their understanding of finance and also how to apply it within the NGO space.

To anyone considering Cohort 3, my advice is to come with an open mind and be willing to participate. Don’t just attend the sessions; ask questions and apply what you learn to your own work. There is always something new to take away, even if you have been exposed to some of the concepts before. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of FINGO again, and I look forward to putting what I have learnt into practice as I continue to grow in my finance career.

They say experience is the best teacher, and I agree.

But some lessons are better learned from someone else’s experience rather than making the mistakes yourself. That’s one of the things I really appreciated about the Fingo Mentorship Programme.

We didn’t just learn budgeting, variance analysis, funding grids and cost allocation as concepts. We actually had to sit with everything and work through it.

We built the budget. Tracked the funding available and figured out what was still missing. Worked through a variance and asked whether it was really a saving or just a delay wearing a disguise. Examined how shared costs should be allocated across different projects.

And because we were working with data and situations that mirrored real life, the lessons were easy to absorb.

That was the real value of the programme: learning a different way to look at the numbers, to question them, to understand what they were telling me, and to think about what could happen next. I’m glad I got the opportunity to be part of the cohort.

There are some things you can only learn by doing yourself, and I know I still have many of those experiences ahead of me. But learning from someone who has already been there gave me so much of a head start.

So if you’re on the fence about Cohort 3, I would say go for it. Take it seriously, but also enjoy it. Ask the questions you’re unsure about, sit with the uncertainty even when things seem confusing, and trust that it’ll start to make sense with time.

Hi, I’m Oluwanifemi Ruth, a Scholarship Student of the FiNGO Finance Mentorship Programme, Cohort 2. Honestly, when I joined this programme, I knew almost nothing about NGO accounting. Budgeting was one of those things I’d heard about but never really understood. I remember feeling excited but also a little nervous, not sure how much I’d actually be able to keep up with.

Looking back now, I can say this has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my academic journey so far. The programme didn’t just throw theory at me. It walked me through the basics first, things like understanding budget variances and how donor-funded projects are managed, and then it pushed me to actually use what I’d learned. One moment I’m really proud of is completing a full Year 1 Budget Monitoring Report for a real NGO project, from the variance analysis down to the final presentation. Doing that from start to finish taught me more than any classroom ever could.

But beyond the technical side, this programme changed something in me. I feel more confident now sitting with real, messy financial data and making sense of it. I trust myself more when I’m presenting numbers to people. And somewhere along the way, it gave me real clarity that finance and auditing are exactly where I want to build my career.

If you’re someone who’s curious about finance but not sure where to start, I’d tell you honestly, this programme is worth it. It doesn’t just teach you finance, it puts you in real situations and gives you real feedback, which is the kind of learning that actually sticks.

And if you’re thinking about joining Cohort 3 but you’re on the fence, just take the step. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. I certainly didn’t. Growth happens while you’re doing the work, not before it. Show up, ask questions, and be patient with yourself.

Being part of the Fingo Finance Mentorship Programme has been a really meaningful experience for me. It’s helped me improve my knowledge and understanding in different areas relevant to my course of study, personal development and future career.

One of the things I particularly appreciate is how much I have learned throughout the programme. My understanding of finance, budgeting and many other areas has improved and it’s all because I was lucky enough to be part of this programme. I have also gained knowledge that goes beyond what I would normally come across in the classroom, which has helped me see some things from a different angle.

First of all, I would like to say that I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of the just-concluded FINGO Finance Mentorship Programme, Cohort 2.0. I would also like to share my experience during the programme. One of the things I particularly appreciated about the programme was that it combined both theoretical and practical knowledge, which made the learning experience more meaningful.

Through the programme, I gained a deeper understanding of accounting concepts and, more importantly, learnt how to apply them in practical situations. For instance, I was taught how to prepare the financial statements of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), which gave me a better understanding of how accounting works beyond the classroom. I also gained practical knowledge about budgeting, including how budgets can be prepared and used astools for effective financial planning and decision-making.

Beyond the technical accounting knowledge, the programme also helped me understand the importance of accuracy, professionalism, critical thinking, and continuous learning in the accounting profession. It has increased my confidence and motivated me to take my accounting career and personal development more seriously. I would definitely recommend this programme to others because it goes beyond theory.
